On the inclusion of the two characters, Gay said: This series will continue to take place in the fictional African country of Wakanda, with the introduction of two female characters. In her own words, “The opportunity to write about black women in a Marvel comic was an opportunity I could not pass up … This is a departure but it is also still storytelling and I love telling interesting stories”. Gay was immediately enticed to do the project, as she saw it as an opportunity to rectify the comic world’s longstanding scarcity of black female writers. It’s no wonder that the two were paired up to give us the next edition of ‘Black Panther’. Gay was heralded for her sophisticated analysis of race, sexuality, and body image. Her debut collection of essays, Bad Feminist was a New York Times bestseller. Roxane Gay is another breakout writer of the decade. This came hot on the heels of his massively successful letter to his son, Between the World and Me. Ta-Nehesi Coates has already contributed two volumes, after he signed on to the project earlier this year. Two of the most successful writers of the past year are joining forces to create the newest volume of the Black Panther comic.
